Payment methods

trivago Express Booking supports several payment methods to process a booking. Currently, advertiser can offer credit/debit card, PayPal, direct debit and invoice payment as payment option on the trivago Express Booking checkout page. Furthermore, trivago is always open to add further payment options, if the advertiser's preferred payment option is not supported yet.


Credit/debit card payment

Credit/debit card payment is one of the most common payment options supported by trivago Express Booking. On the checkout page users have to enter their credit/debit card details which will then be forwarded to the advertiser or the advertiser's payment service provider to process the payment.

Credit/debit card payment for PCI compliant advertisers

Since trivago is PCI certified, advertisers accepting credit cards must be in compliance with PCI Security Council standards as well. If this is the case, advertisers will receive the credit/debit card details directly from trivago.

Credit/debit card payment for non PCI compliant advertisers

Advertisers not being in compliance with PCI Security Council standards can work with a payment service provider to offer credit/debit card payment on the trivago Express Booking checkout page. In this case, trivago tokenizes a credit/debit card first before forwarding the payment details to the advertiser. Please see the illustration below for further details:

  1. Once a user has entered the payment details, trivago creates an order_id and sends out a tokenization request including credit/debit card data to the advertiser's payment service provider.
  2. The advertiser's payment service provider stores the payment details as well as the order id and generates a token. This token is then sent back to trivago.
  3. trivago sends out a booking submit request including the token and the order id to the advertiser.
  4. The advertiser forwards the token and the order id to the payment service provider in order to process the payment.
  5. The payment service provider provides the advertiser with the transaction status.
  6. The advertiser forwards the transaction status to trivago so that trivago then communicates the booking status to the user.

Credit/debit card payment with Installments

trivago Express Booking also supports Installments for credit card payments. In some countries (e.g. Brazil and Turkey) is very common to pay by installments. This means that not the entire amount is transferred at once but will be charged with a sequence of smaller amounts. PayPal

If users decide to pay with PayPal, users are redirected to PayPal once the booking has been submitted. Following this, users can authorise the payment and trivago would inform the advertiser if the authorisation succeeded. Direct debit

If users choose direct debit as payment option, the IBAN needs to be entered on the trivago Express Booking checkout page. Once the booking has been confirmed by the user, trivago forwards the payment details to the advertisers. Bank transfer

trivago Express Booking also supports bank transfer as payment option. If users choose to pay per bank transfer, the advertiser has to provide the payment details for within the confirmation e-mail. Booking Without Guarantee

trivago Express Booking also supports Booking Without Guarantee. To perform a booking, travelers donĀ“t have to insert any payment data. Travelers have to arrive until a defined time and payment is done at the hotel. If the customer does not show up, there are no cancellation penalties.
